Satoshi Kamiya

Biography

Satoshi Kamiya(神谷 哲史 – means “A wise man in a valley of gods”) is known as a King of Origami Dragon because his dragons designs are very beautiful and complex. Most of his models, despite being ultra-complex and extremely detailed, still have a sense of beauty and are quite aesthetic and pleasing to look at.
Satoshi Kamiya was born on 6th of June , 1981 in Nagoya, Japan. He is now 28 years old. He started learning about Origami when he was only 2 years old. Since then he quickly mastered the art of origami and started designing his own models. Some of his models were designed at the age of 14, and these models were already pretty advanced.
His models are pure Origami, in other words, it is made by single sheet of square paper which can’t be cut or glued. Some of Satoshi Kamiya models are so complex that they require about 275 steps to be completed or need more than 5 hours for an origami master to fold them. His works, for example, are two dragons, one called the Divine Dragon "Bahamut"(from Final Fantasy franchise) and the other called the "Ancient Dragon". The most impressive Satoshi Kamiya designed model is Ryujin. Ryujin is so beautiful because of its details like wonderful scales, moustache, claws and horns, etc. It takes about one month to be completed.
By 1999, Kamiya had already risen to the top of his field, taking first place in the Third Origami Championship on the variety show TV Champion in 1999. He would go on to win the fourth championship in 2000, as well as the fifth in 2002 and the sixth in 2004 for four consecutive wins.
He has also studied hand-made paper in the United States under the tutelage of Michael G. LaFosse of Boston, and origami at Origami USA in New York, where he cultivated many personal exchanges between local artists and origami-lovers in general.
In 2005, he published a collection of original works through Origami House, and most recently participated as a guest in the 2007 Origami USA Convention in New York.
