ต่อมใต้สมองเป็นต่อมไร้ท่อมีสีเทาแกมแดง มีขนาดเล็ก อยู่ใต้สมองส่วนไฮโปรทาลามัส

ประกอบด้วย

1) ต่อมใต้สมองส่วนหน้า (Anterior Pituitary Gland) มีขนาดใหญ่ สร้างฮอร์โมนหลายชนิด เช่น GH ACTH TSH FSH เป็นต้น

2) ต่อมใต้สมองส่วนกลาง (Intermediate Pituitary Gland) ขนาดเล็กมาก พบในสัตว์มีกระดูกสันหลัง สร้างฮอร์โมน MSH 

3) ต่อมใต้สมองส่วนหลัง (Posterior Pituitary Gland) ไม่สร้างฮอร์โมนแต่จะทำหน้าที่เก็บฮอร์โมนที่สร้างมาจากไฮโปรทาลามัส
