สมาคมประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ (Association Of South East Asian Nations) หรือ"อาเซียน" (ASEAN) เป็นองค์การทางภูมิศาสตร์การเมืองและองค์การความร่วมมือทางเศรษฐกิจในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อร่วมมือกันในการเพิ่มอัตราการเจริญทางเศรษฐกิจ การพัฒนาสังคม การพัฒนาวัฒนธรรมในกลุ่มประเทศสมาชิกและการธำรงรักษาสันติภาพและความมั่นคงในพื้นที่ อีกทั้งยังเป็นการเปิดโอกาสให้คลายข้อพิพาทระหว่างประเทศสมาชิกอย่างสันติ
ประวัติความเป็นมาของการก่อตั้งอาเซียน:
สมาคมแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้มีจุดเริ่มต้นขึ้นเมื่อเดือน "กรกฎาคม พ.ศ.2504" โดยประเทศไทย มาเลเซียและฟิลิปปินส์ได้ร่วมกันจัดตั้งสมาคมอาเซียนฃึ้นเพื่อร่วมมือกันทางเศรษฐกิจ สังคมและวัฒนธรรม แต่ดำเนินการได้เพียง 2 ปีก้ต้องหยุดชะงักลงเนื่องจากความผกผันทางการเมืองระหว่างประเทศอินโดนีเซียและมาเลเซีย จนกระทั่งต่อมามีการฟื้นฟูสัมพันธภาพระหว่างประเทศขึ้น จึงได้มีการแสวงหาลู่ทางจัดตั้งองค์การความร่วมมือทางเศรษฐกิจขึ้นในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ และพันเอก ดร.ถนัด คอมันตร์ อดีตรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศในสมัยรัฐบาลจอมพลถนอม กิตติขจร ได้มีการลงนาม "ปฏิญญากรุงเทพ" ที่พระราชวังสราญรมย์ เมื่อวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม พ.ศ.2510 จากปฏิญญาอาเซียน ซึ่งลงนามโดยรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศของประเทศสมาชิกก่อตั้ง 10 ประเทศได้แก่ ทุกประเทศที่อยู่ในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ยกเว้นติมอร์ตะวันออก
วัตถุประสงค์ในการก่อตั้ง:
1.เพื่อร่วมมือช่วยเหลือกันในการเร่งรัดพัฒนาการเจริญเติบโตทางเศรษฐกิจและความก้าวหน้าทางสังคมวัฒนธรรมของประเทศสมาชิก
2.เพื่อส่งเสริมสันติภาพและความมั่นคงให้แก่ภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้
3.เพื่อให้ความร่วมมือในการส่งเสริมด้านการเกษตร อุตสาหกรรม การค้าและคมนาคมขนส่ง
4.เพื่อช่วยเหลือซึ่งกันและกันทางด้านการศึกษา วิทยาการ อาชีพและบริการ
กลุ่มประเทศสมาชิกของสมาคมอาเซียนมีทั้งหมด 10 ประเทศได้แก่:
1.ไทย 6.บรูไน
2.อินโดนีเซีย 7.เวียดนาม
3.ฟิลิปปินส์ 8.ลาว
4.มาเลเซีย 9.พม่า
5.สิงคโปร์ 10.กัมพูชา

สำนักงานใหญ่ของสมาคมอาเซียนตั้งอยู่ที่ "กรุงจาการ์ตา" ซึ่งเป็นเมืองหลวงของประเทศอินโดนีเซียตั้งอยู่บนเกาะชวาฝั่งตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ และเป็นเมืองที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียง

สัญลักษณ์อาเซียน:
สัญลักษณ์อาเซียนคือ ต้นข้าวสีเหลือง 10 ต้นที่ถูกมัดรวมกันไว้ หมายถึง ประเทศในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ทั้ง 10 ประเทศรวมกันเพื่อมิตรภาพและความเป็นน้ำหนึ่งใจเดียวกัน สีทั้งหมดที่ปรากฎในสัญลักษณ์ของอาเซียนเป็นสีสำคัญในธงชาติของแต่ละประเทศ โดย
สีน้ำเงิน หมายถึง สันติภาพและความมั่นคง
สีแดง หมายถึง ความกล้าหาญและความก้าวหน้า
สีขาว หมายถึง ความบริสุทธิ์
สีเหลือง หมายถึง ความเจริญรุ่งเรือง
