หลักการใช้ Past Perfect

 ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ 2 เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นและสิ้นสุดลงในอดีต  "เหตุการณ์หนึ่งเกิดขึ้นก่อนอีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่ง"

                          เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นก่อน ใช้ Past Perfect

                          เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นหลัง ใช้ Past Simple

    ~มักจะเชื่อมด้วยคำว่า when , before , after , until , as soon as~

     Ex.  She had gone out before David came.

            He had written to her four times when he got her reply.

 ใช้กับคำว่า by the time

By the time + Past simple , Past Perfect

Ex.  By the time the sun set , we had left school. เมื่อยามพระอาทิตย์ตกดิน เราก็ได้ออกจากโรงเรียนกันมากันแล้ว

      By the time the doctor came, the poor man had died. กว่าที่หมอจะมา คนจนคนนั้นก็เสียชีวิตไปแล้ว

 ใช้กับ          

                               No sooner                        than
                               Hardly                             when    
Subject  +  had  +  Scarcely      +  Verb 3  +  when  +  Past Simple
                               no sooner                       than 
                               hardly                             when

Ex.  We had no sooner sat down than the phone rang. เรานั่งลงไม่ทันไร เสียงโทรศัพท์ก็ดัง
       No sooner had we sat down than the phone rang.

ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นก่อนเวลาหนึ่งในอดีต

Ex.  Jane had never seen a lion until yesterday. เจนไม่เคยเห็นสิงโตเลยจนกระทั่งเมื่อวานนี้ (จึงได้เห็น)
