หลักการใช้ Present Continuous Tense

 ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังกระทำอยู่ในขณะนั้น

โดยมากจะมีคำบอกเวลา ได้แก่ now , at this moment , at the moment , today , at present

Ex.  The bees are humming. ฝูงผึ้งกำลังส่งเสียงหึ่ง

        The sun is shining. ดวงอาทิตย์กำลังส่องแสง

 ใช้แสดงเหตุการณ์ในอนาคต ซึ่งคาดว่าเป็นอย่างนั้นแน่นอน

การใช้ Present Coutinuous ในความหมายที่เป็นอนาคตนี้ ปกติเขาใช้กับกริยาที่มีการเคลื่อนที่(verbs of movement)

Ex.  We  are moving into a new house next month.

         We are going to Paris on Sunday. 
    

 Commentaries เช่น เวลาพากย์กีฬา

Simple Tense ใช้กับ Quicker actions

Continuous Tense ใช้กับ Longer actions

Ex.  Oxford is drawing slightly ahead of Cambridge now: It is rowing with a beautiful rythm: Cambridge is looking a little disorganized

กริยาที่"ไม่ใช้"ใน Continuous Tenses เช่น

hear, see, feel, smell, taste, love, hate, know, understand, believe

กริยา ที่ไม่ใช้ใน Continuous ได้แก่ กริยาแสดงการรับรู้ (verbs of perception) แสดงภาวะของจิตใจ(state of mind) ความรู้สึก(feeling) หรือแสดงสัมพันธภาพ (relationship)

เมื่อต้องการจะบอกว่า กำลังมีอาการเช่นนี้อยู่ จะใช้เพียง Present simple เท่านั้น เช่น

• I don't see anything here.(ไม่ใช่ I am not seeing....) ผมไม่เห็นอะไรที่นี้เลย

• I see what you mean. (ไม่ใช่ I am seeing...) ผมเข้าใจว่าคุณหมายความถึงอะไร

• Do you hear the noise? (ไม่ใช่ Are you hearing...) คุณได้ยินเสียงอะไรไหม
