ทำให้โบราณสถานแห่งนี้ทรุดตัวตามไปด้วย กระทั้งสแตมฟอร์ด แรฟเฟิลส์ ผู้ถูกส่งมาประจำการเป็นผู้สำเร็จราชการ ของอังกฤษเพื่อปกครองอาณานิคมชวาในช่วงนั้น ได้เห็นความสำคัญของบุโรพุทโธจึงเริ่มบูรณะขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1855 และสามารถเริ่มเปิดให้ ผู้คนทั่วโลกเข้ามาเยี่ยมชม
