เมื่อได้รับเชื้อนี้เข้าไปจะไม่แสดงอาการทันที แต่จะแสดงอาการหลังจากรับเชื้อประมาณ 1 สัปดาห์ โดยผู้ป่วยจะมีอาการปวดหัว เบื่ออาหาร มีไข้สูงมาก ท้องร่วง บางรายมีผื่นขึ้นตามตัว แน่นท้อง สามารถหายได้เองภายใน 1 เดือน แต่ผู้ป่วยควรจะพบแพทย์หลังจากมีอาการแล้ว เพราะอาจจะเสียชีวิตจากภาวะปอดบวมได้
หลีกเลี่ยงอาหารที่มีเชื้อโรคทุกชนิด และนั่นหมายถึงว่า ให้ทานอาหารที่สะอาด อยู่ในภาชนะที่สะอาด รวมถึงล้างมือให้สะอาดก่อนทานทุกครั้ง และควรจะหลีกเลี่ยงอาหารจากร้านค้าข้างถนนที่อยู่ในบริเวณที่ไม่สะอาด เสี่ยงต่อการติดเชื้อ หรืออีกทางหนึ่งคือฉีดวัคซีนป้องกันไข้ไทฟอยด์
