การจับใจความสำคัญของเรื่อง

ตามธรรมดาใจความสำคัญหรือใจความหลัก(main idea) จะอยู่ที่ topic sentenceซึ่งดดดยปกติ จะเป็นประโยคแรกของเรื่อง เช่น

1. Niagara fakks has anirresistible lurefor dare -devils. Some soolhardy men have dared death by dancing above the chasm oa a tight rope or plung over the catsm on a tight rope or plunging over the cataract in a barrel . Others have tried to swim the current and to shoot the rapods in boats 

topic  sentence ไม่จำเป็นต้องเป็นประโยคแรกเสมอไป อาจอยู่ที่ใดของเนื้อเรื่องก็ได้ เช่น อาจเป็นประโยคสุดท้ายของย่อหน้า อาจเป็นประโยคสองหรือบางครั้งอาจไม่มี topic sentence เลย ผู้อ่านต้องจับใจความสำคัญเอาเอง ขอให้นักดูตัวอย่าง topic sentence ต่อจากนี้ 

2. People behave strangely sometimes. it isn't very unsual to haer of or read about cases as these : a lady with all the advantages of wealth and position picking up a champagne bottle , ready to launch a shipsuddenly disappears inconfution a sodier keeps his bride waiting at the church for an hour before he decides to show up for the wedding ceremory and, for one last example , a teenage typist is afraid of changing her job. The lives and interests of these people are greatly differrent , but they have one thing in common . The reason for their peculiar behavior is that they are shy . 

ในย่อหน้านี้ผู้เขียนให้ตัวอย่างของคนที่ประพฤติแปลกๆแล้วสรุปว่าพวกเขาทำอะไรแปลกๆเพราะขี้อาย

บางครั้ง topic sentence อาจอยู่ตรงกลาง ส่วนบนและส่วนท้าย เป็นตัวเอย่าง หรือ รายละเอียดที่ขยายใจความสำคัญ

3. There are a lot for of deer here. there are bears ,mountain lions and coyotes . this area attracts a great number of hunters and fishermen . To thr east there are streams full of trout, and there are ducks , geese and pheasants.

ในย่อหน้านี้ topic sentence อยู่ตรงกลาง ส่วนบนและส่วนท้ายเป็นตัวอย่าง หรือ รายละเอียดที่ขยายใจความสำคัญ  

4.Penicillin is one of the greatest of the wonder drugs . it has saved thousands of lives already and will save many more in the future . But it hasn't effect whatever on the bulk of the ills of man and of beast . Good as it is , it is certainly not a cure-all

ในย่อหน้านี้ผู้เขียนเริ่มต้นด้วยใจความสำคัญว่า "เพนนิซิลินเป็นยามหัศจรรย์ที่สุดอย่างหนึ่ง"แต่ลงท้ายว่า"มันไม่ใช่ยาครอบจักรวาลที่สามารถรักโรคได้ทุกอย่าง"
