การแข่งขันเยาวชนนานาชาติถูกจัดขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกที่เมืองเซลจิ,ประเทศ ซาโลวาเนีย ในปี 2511 โดยมีประเทศที่เข้าร่วมเพียง 9 ประเทศ นับตั้งแต่นั้นมาก็มีการจัดการเเข่งขันอย่างต่อเนื่องจนถึงปัจจุบัน ซึ่งครั้งล่าสุดจัดขึ้นที่ เมืองโคเวนทรี ประเทศอังกฤษ มีประเทศสมาชิกเข้าร่วมแข่งขัน 36 ประเทศ 54 เมือง จากทวีปแอฟริกา เอเชีย ยุโรป อเมริกาเหนือ อเมริกาใต้ 

The first ICG was held in the city of Celje in Slovania in 1968, with only 9 participating countries. Since then, there have been 37 games. The last gathering was in Cleveland,Ohio,USA, from July 25-August 2, 2004. Participants were 2,500 young athletes from 142 cities from 49 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.
