Part 4 : Questions
Direction : Read the following passages and choose the best answer for each question.
Passage 7
If you are just leaving school or
college and ate looking for your first
job you must sure that any previous
work
experience does not go unnoticed. Mention
any part - time jobs you have had
together with work experience placements
or special projects you undertook. Mention
any responsibilities that you were given
in these jobs ( or at school ) which
show transferable skills that can be
built upon in other jobs ; for
example , you may have taken the
role of social
secretary or fundraiser for charity projects
at school , etc. There show aptitudes for
other posts ; many of the skills you
have
learned through these activities may be
transferable . You may be used to
booking meetings , working out budgets,
etc. These can all be useful
to your potential employer. You don't
need to mention very short - term jobs which
are not
relevant to your chosen career.
Mentioning work experience is useful as
you can then convince an employer that
you are aware of the demands
of working , which are rather different to
being in full - time education. The
interviewer will want to be sure that
you will turn
up on time and can work throughout
the working day. If you have not
yet worked and are indignantly thinking
that you
spent far longer than the average working
day writing your thesis , etc. , remember that
in those circumstances you could
plan your own time. If you wanted
to start work at lunch - time and
continue until midnight , nobody would stop
you. In full -
time work , you will need to fit in
with the timescales of the organization.
You may be competing with other
individuals who do have full - time work
experience ( although they may not
have your qualifications ) so think of
the advantages there are to the
company of taking you on instead , and
mention
these without being rude to the
others.
How you will fit in will be
judged on your academic and home life
as the prospective employer has nothing else
to go on. Some interviewers still ask
questions regarding you parents' occupations
to get an idea of your background.
