Passage 4
It is quite possible to spend years
studying or even teaching various languages
without ever having a very firm
or useful notion of what a language
is. But to proceed in this way
makes learning a language much more
difficult than
it need be. This is probably the
main reason why so many people say , "
I don't really speak French. I just
studied it in school ! " This lack
of confidence is bad enough when
applied to a foreign language. When extended
to the native language , however , it can
cause serious worry and outright suffering.
Our confusion about the nature of
languages is really disturbing. It's so
bad that many people who speak
excellent English never have the
satisfaction of
knowing they do , but go through life
with feelings of guilt about their
supposed poor skill.
It would be pleasant to avoid such dangers
by agreeing on a nice , efficient definition
of language , but no such
easy solutions will work. A language
is much too complicated to be simply
defined. What most people need is not
a
definition of language , but some information
on how a few languages developed and
work. To begin with he obvious ,
language is what human beings talk
with. Without language , the human race
would hardly be human ! In fact , we use
language to help each other and to
live better. We use it to get
food and clothing and shelter. Simply , we
use it to
communicate in order to make our lives
better. So , with this in mind , those who
can use language to make their lives
better are really using a language for
its original purpose. So , this feeling of
speaking it badly just doesn't make any
sense.
